This is one of those posts that is really hard to write. I have some sad news to report, but it's personal, not about my soldiers. On August 18, 2005 my Father-In-Law, Donald Lambert passed away in his sleep in his home. Don was 73. His obituary can be found here at the Logansport Pharos-Tribune website.
I've known Don since August 2000. The first time I met him was also the first day I met my wife. Beth and I had been talking back and forth on the internet, by mail and phone for a few months. The first time I meet her in person I was helping her move from her parents home, where she had been staying for a few months, the a new appartment in the next town over. Meeting the woman who later became my wife and her parents all in the same day was an event.
Don is one of those peple that when you meet him, you never forget him. We hit it off right away, mostly since we had several things in common. The most obvious thing in common for us in the Army. Don spent 43 years in uniform. He enlisted into the Indiana Army National Guard when he was just 16. He lied about his age to get in and he never got caught.
We had around 400 people pass through the funeral home yesterday for the viewing. Don's funeral is today at the small country church the Lambert's attended and where Beth and I were married. We'll have a full military funeral. It's going to be very hard.
Don's wife Marge recieved a condolence call from The Adjutent General of the State of Indiana, Major General Roy Umbarger. MG Umbarger didn't know Don real well, but he knew him. Hell, MG Umbarger was probably a Second Lieutenant when Don was a Staff Sergeant!
I'd love to write more, but I need to get to the Church. I'm going to be a pallbearer and need to get there early. I'll write more when I can.
